Facts about Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie Biography
Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie is known as much for her offscreen romances, adoptions and political activism as for her movie roles.
Angelina Jolie first made a small splash in 1998, playing doomed model Gia Marie Carangi in the HBO movie Gia. She was a hit as the love interest in the offbeat air-traffic-controller drama Pushing Tin (1999, with John Cusack), but it was winning an Oscar for her supporting role as a troubled mental patient in the 1999 Winona Ryder film Girl, Interrupted that made her a big-time movie star.
Jolie sealed her international fame (and box office clout) by playing the video game heroine Lara Croft in Tomb Raider (2001) and Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life (2003). Jolie’s plush-lipped, brooding Gothic presence (and ample tattoos) made her a hit with the younger generation, and her wild-life offscreen antics made her a hit with the tabloids, especially while she was married to her Pushing Tin co-star, Billy Bob Thornton from 2000 until their divorce in 2003. Jolie has since become famous for her charitable impulses: she was named a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees in 2001.
She adopted a Cambodian boy, Maddox (in 2002), a daughter born in Ethiopia, Zahara (in 2005), and a boy from Vietnam, Pax Thien (in 2007). She and Brad Pitt starred in the action film Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2005, but whatever excitement the movie generated was overshadowed by the real-life drama of Pitt leaving wife Jennifer Aniston to move in with Jolie.
The excessive tabloid attention didn’t stop Jolie from making movies: she made a special appearance in the CGI fantasy Beowulf (2007), lent her voice (as the tigress) in Kung Fu Panda (2008), played an action hero in Wanted (2008), turned in another Oscar-nominated performance in Clint Eastwood‘s Changeling (2008) and starred in the 2010 spy thriller Salt. In 2011 she took another step, writing and directing the Bosnian war drama In the Land of Blood and Honey, before starring as a Disney witch in Maleficent (2014) and, with husband Brad Pitt, in the troubled-marriage drama By The Sea (2015).
Angelina Jolie is the daughter of Jon Voight, who won a best actor Oscar for the 1978 movie Coming Home (the same movie for which Jane Fonda won best actress). Her mother Marcheline Bertrand, who was divorced from Voigt and died in 2007, was also an actress… Angelina Jolie played Cornelia Wallace, wife to Alabama governor George Wallace, in the 1997 TV movie George Wallace… Angelina Jolie’s first biological child with Brad Pitt, a daughter named Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, was born in 2006 at a resort in Namibia. They also have a son and daughter, Knox and Vivienne, born on 12 July 2008 in Nice, France… The birth order of Jolie’s children is: Maddox (b. 2001), Pax (b. 2003), Zahara (b. 2005), Shiloh (b. 2006), and the twins Knox and Vivienne (b. 2008)… After years of domestic partnership, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie finally married at Chateau Miraval in Le Val, France on August 23, 2014. However, Jolie filed for divorce in September of 2016, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
