I’ll Have Another Biography

I’ll Have Another is the chestnut horse who won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes in 2012, setting him up for a run at the Triple Crown. I’ll Have Another was bred in Kentucky and born there in 2009; his sire was Flowers Alley and his dam was Arch’s Gal Edith.  Owner J. Paul Reddam bought the horse for $35,000 in 2011. (I’ll Have Another “was named after his owner’s standard response to his wife whenever she offers him a cookie,” according to the Chicago Tribune.) He is trained by Doug O’Neill. With jockey Mario Gutierrez up, I’ll Have Another came from behind to beat Bodemeister by 1.5 lengths and win the Kentucky Derby in a time of 2:01:83.  Two week later, in the Preakness, he again came from behind to beat Bodemeister by a neck in a time of 1:55:94.  Hopes for the first Triple Crown since Affirmed won in 1978 were dashed the day before the Belmont Stakes, when it was announced that I’ll Have Another was out of the race, due to an injury.

Extra credit

I’ll Have Another was the first horse since Big Brown in 2008 to win both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness; a total of 22 horses have done so… Affirmed was the last horse to win the Triple Crown, in 1978… His sire, Flowers Alley, ran ninth in the 2005 Kentucky Derby.
