Vince Gilligan Biography

Name at birth: George Vincent Gilligan, Jr.

Vince Gilligan is a television producer and writer best known as the creator of the TV series Breaking Bad (starring Bryan Cranston). He grew up in Virginia, where he had an interest in art and film from an early age. He graduated in 1989 from New York’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he wrote the screenplay for what eventually became the Drew Barrymore comedy Home Fries (1998). That screenplay caught the attention of Oscar-winning producer Mark Johnson (Rain Man), which led to Gilligan working on The X-Files in 1995. He started on the show as a writer, and by the end of the series’ run, Gilligan was an executive producer. He went on to create the show’s short-lived spinoff, The Lone Gunmen, in 2001. After another movie screenplay (2008’s Hancock), Gilligan got Breaking Bad on the air. The show was a hit and during its run, from 2008 to 2013, Gilligan received 10 Emmy nominations.
