Gertrude Ederle Is Not 103

...because she died five years ago, along with Warren Zevon and Keiko the whale.

Ederle was a lot more famous than either of them in her day. She was the first woman to swim the 35 miles across the English Channel. She pulled herself across in 14 hours and 39 minutes on a summer's day in 1926. (Top that, Keiko!)

And she would have been 103 today.

I think she proved early on that a woman can do almost anything a man can do, if she puts her mind to it and works at it. In that era, while women finally had the vote, there was still a lot of gender discrimination, and they were still considered the "weaker" sex. I've always admired "Trudy" for having the gumption and tenacity to step outside the stereotype for women of her age. She, and Amelia Earhart, probably have a lot of adventures to discuss in the infinite realm they both now share.
