If Not for Ronald Reagan
It was 25 years ago today that Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president -- in a private ceremony -- for his second term.
Because January 20th, traditionally Inauguration Day, fell on a Sunday, public ceremonies were held off for a day.
At this point in his presidency, Ronald Reagan had aggressively upped the ante in the Cold War, told America to "just say no" to drugs (the illegal kind), seen the worst of a "slight recession" and wrassled with the Democrat majority in congress over deficit spending and budget cuts.
He had not yet begun to supply weapons to Iran or unknowingly allow Oliver North to wage a secret war in Nicaragua.
But because he crushed the Soviet Union and all that is evil, we will honor President Reagan with this video, which gives a glimpse of what the world could have been if we hadn't whupped the Russians:

I don't know Russian, but it seems like the translator could have come up with a more melliflous phrase for "let it be" than "pood it takk."Probably a ham-handed socialist *government* translation. Thank you, Ronald Reagan!
Actually the ceremony was delayed due to a bitter cold snap, the parade was cancelled and the ceremony held inside. But as I recall it happened on the 20th.
"Because January 20, 1985 fell on a Sunday, the public Inauguration ceremony was scheduled for Monday, January 21, 1985. Reagan was sworn in privately on January 20. Owing to record cold temperatures on January 21, 1985, however, the public Inauguration ceremony was moved indoors to the Rotunda, and became a semiprivate ceremony."This account comes from the U.S. government:http://inaugural.senate.gov/history/chronology/rwreagan1985.cfm
