It's Roscoe Lee Browne Sunday!
Here's video of Roscoe Lee Browne talking about his first acting audition.
(We can't embed the thing -- you'll have to follow the link.)
Turns out the "twelve hours" line we mentioned earlier wasn't the whole story. Browne began the audition with a director who pondered at length (and aloud) whether their production of Julius Caesar could have a "colored" Cassius -- or if not, whether double-casting Browne as the Soothsayer in act one and as Pindarus in act two would be "colored one time too many."
Browne's witty response brought the house down, and gives some extra bite to his later line to Joseph Papp that "I have no intention of bearing any torches." (Papp's reply was "No, you'll have words. You're good.")
The whole video is great, Browne obviously relishing the tale. The action above starts about 75% through the clip.
