Pat Robertson Races to Say Something Crazy About Haiti
Up to 100,000 dead in Haiti. Fortunately, Pat Robertson is ready to put it all in perspective:
Christie, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French, you know, Napoleon the Third and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact with the devil.
They said, 'We will serve you if you'll get us free from the French.' True story. And so the devil said 'OK, it's a deal.'
And, ah, they kicked the French out, you know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free, but ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other.
The incident Robertson seems to be referring to is a voodoo ceremony which supposedly happened at Bois Caiman in 1791. It's the subject of much skepticism among scholars. To wit:
"Kauffmann uses his meticulous analysis of original sources to argue that there never was such a ceremony and that its actual origins were in the writings of a Frenchman who was using it to denigrate the slaves, not celebrate a motivational or mystical moment."
Well, Robertson is the same man who blamed God for Ariel Sharon's stroke in 2006. Seems like in Robertson's world you're at risk no matter who you side with.

As an evanfelical Christian I am appalled to hear these comments on the Haitain horror. This type of comment doesn't reflect the God I know. It makes the Christian world sound like heartless religious nuts. There are true Christians in Haiti and they are and have been working to help the poor. The needs are insurmontable. My friend Mary started the orphanage there before she died of cancer. Her S-I-L, one of my best friends, cried at the destrucken of the building. We're still waiting to see if anyone survived. We all live on a shifting ball. True it was designed this way but to say God shook Haiti to punish them is unrealistic and pretty cruel to say at any time.If we want to show the love of God (and he does love everyone) we have to show that AGAPE LOVE Jesus said we are to have for everyone. God is the only Judge. Not Dr. Pat Robertson. Dr. it would be better to go and offer agape love by helping in physical ways instead of saying they deserve what happened.
As a born again Christian, I am disappointed in Pat Robertson's comment regarding Haiti. The United States is not a sin free country. We have serious issues. Many in our country have embraced homosexuality, crime is rapid, many of our citizens are having sex outside of marriage, abortions are legal;etc. Maybe Americans need to participate in earthquake drills.
