Shepard Fairey Draws a Crowd
Shepard Fairey has a new exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. Called "Supply and Demand," it runs through August 22nd and shows about 250 of his works.
The CAC welcomed the "renowned street artist and political provocateur," as they call Fairey, with a free opening on Friday night. We were there, along with what seemed like half of Cincinnati, many of the citizens dressed rather fashionably.

show of photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe.
Back down in the lobby, a two-story mural of Patti Smith.
Great show. Colorful, fun, and (eventually) thought-provoking. The place was getting crazier as we were leaving -- Fairey himself was supposed to be spinning records for a late-night party in the lobby. As we went out the front entrance, the door lady counted heads and then let in two more people from the growing line outside.

Great photos of the event. That's cool that you got to go... or that you chose to go.ANDRE THE GIANT HAS A POSSE was his first big deal. He says he was trying to show a pal how to do a stencil, and he just grabbed the image from a nearby newspaper.I don't get bogged down in the mega-arguments about whether what he does should be called Art, I just like looking at the stuff. Usually.Like I've said... he ain't no Banksy.
i saw those Andre the Giant stickers in San Diego (and later in Los Angeles) ten years ago, and i was fortunate enough to meet him at a Merry Karnowsky show a few years ago and (later) tour his studio in Eagle Rock (or somewhere thereabouts). Nice fellow, but he's a bit disingenuous about how "original" his work is.... AP lawsuit - Obey Plagiarist Shepard Fairey
