Meryl Streep Nominated for Ten Millionth Oscar
Good grief, not again.
Meryl Streep has been nominated for an Academy Award yet again, as best actress for Julie & Julia. It's her 16th nomination in 32 years.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would nominate Meryl Streep as best actress for reading the back of a Cap'n Crunch box aloud with 2% milk dribbling down her chin. They're obsessed. It's embarrassing.
Here are some other things the Academy would nominate Meryl Streep as best actress for:
- Jogging around the block with her Schnauzer.
- Tripping over a rowing machine while cleaning the rumpus room.
- Reading a Greyhound bus schedule to a homeless man in a movingly authentic Catalan accent.
- Gargling purple Smart Water in a 30-second TV spot for Japan.
- Slapping a frisky Jack Nicholson at a Lakers game.
- Playing an overwrought and self-promoting Scandinavian baroness and author in a beautifully photographed and terribly boring epic set in Africa.
- Barfing up bad clams.
Look, she's a fine, fine actress. Nobody is arguing that. But c'mon: an average of every other year for three decades running? She's not that good. NOBODY is that good. Katharine Hepburn is second in line with 12 nominations, and her career lasted for 60 years!
For pete's sakes.

Meryl Streep's Kid Mamie
That's actress Mamie Gummer, the daughter of Meryl Streep and sculptor Donald Gummer, at a Whitney Museum gala last night.
Granted, the flashy dress is what caught my eye, but then I couldn't stop looking at the Streepyness of her face.
Mamie was born in 1983 (her given name is Mary), so she's 26 now. Here's a comparison with her mom, age 32, in the 1981 film The French Lieutenant's Woman:
Uncanny.
Side note: Gummer made her screen debut as a toddler in the Streep-Nicholson film Heartburn. She was billed (for reasons I can't uncover) as Natalie Stern, and earned this shout-out in the New York Times review: "In particular, Natalie Stern, an inordinately cute baby, is already accomplished enough to steal scenes even from Miss Streep."
The IMDB says Gummer had a small part in Ang Lee's 2009 comedy Taking Woodstock and has four flicks currently filming or in post-production: a drama, a comedy, a horror film and a romance.

Happy 35th Death Day, Walter Brennan!
Died on this day in 1974.The late Mr. Brennan is still the forgotten Oscar champ -- and still tied with Jack Nicholson for the all-time male lead.
