Prince Charles Loves His New Football Jersey

Prince Charles visits Burnley Football Club on 5 February 2009

This photo of Prince Charles just cracks me up, for some reason.  You have to love the guy.

As we scan the daily photo feed from our friends at WENN, His Royal Highness always manages to look like he's actually interested in whatever odd public service trip or photo op Buckingham palace has sent him out to that day.  It's a gift.

Perhaps he learned it from Queen Elizabeth herself.

Here's the Queen, not just interested but delighted, at the Tate and Lyle sugar refinery as it celebrated 130 years of production in 2008.

Queens get to skip the hard hat.

Confounding Letter of the Day

This email just in from a Who2 user, in its entirety:
Re: Your bio of Mrs. Camilla (nee Shand) Parker Bowles. Camilla is not actually a wife of Prince Charles. Rather what you saw on television with Camilla and her younger chum Diana Spencer was Prince Charles, an already married man, giving into ransom demands of persons who had abducted his wife. And you are still seeing the Royal Family and the United States government giving into ransom demands; the wife of Prince Charles is still abducted.
Now that we know that, what do we do?

Prince William, Shadow King?

The BBC News reports that Buckingham Palace is dismissing the claim that Queen Elizabeth is passing some royal duties on to Prince William, her 27 year-old grandson.

According to this story in the Daily Mail, the 83 year-old monarch has been passing off some of her work to the young prince -- the implication is that she's leaving her son, Prince Charles, out of the royal loop.

The Daily Mail claims they've seen receipts from the Treasury that give their claim merit. But according to this story from the BBC and also this story from the Guardian, the royal family is denying the charge that William is some sort of "shadow king" (a term used by the Daily Mail).

Elizabeth has been on the throne since 1952, when Charles was still a toddler, and now he's 61 years old. That's not so old he couldn't be the next king, and he's had plenty of training, but he's married to Camilla Parker-Bowles now, with whom he had a love affair while he was married to the late Princess Diana (Diana died in 1997).

That little detail sticks in the craw of some royal subjects apparently, and for years the word has been that the queen was not happy about her son's relationship with Parker-Bowles.

Charles and Di had Prince William (b. 1982) and Prince Harry (b. 1984) together, and while the sons may have had their ups and downs in the British press, they're more popular than their father, especially among younger Britons.

The Queen is NOT Her Royal Highness

MAY I RESPECTFULLY POINT OUT THAT QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 IS NOT 'HRH' (HER ROYAL HIGHNESS), SHE IS IN FACT 'HM' -- THAT IS TO SAY -- 'HER MAJESTY.'
So writes Who2 reader Eric Ryan-Lander from the island of Madiera. He noted that we had identified the Queen as "HRH Queen Elizabeth II" in some of our photo captions.

Upon further study, including a review of Debrett's, we see that Mr. Ryan-Lander is correct. Some members of the British royal family are identified as His Royal Highness or Her Royal Highness, yes. But the monarch is not. For the Queen only, the HRH is dropped and the proper title is Her Majesty.

By the same token, Prince Charles is currently His Royal Highness, but he'll be His Majesty if and when he becomes king.

So we learned something. We've changed our captions, and we thank Mr. Ryan-Lander for the alert.
