The Queen is NOT Her Royal Highness

MAY I RESPECTFULLY POINT OUT THAT QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 IS NOT 'HRH' (HER ROYAL HIGHNESS), SHE IS IN FACT 'HM' -- THAT IS TO SAY -- 'HER MAJESTY.'
So writes Who2 reader Eric Ryan-Lander from the island of Madiera. He noted that we had identified the Queen as "HRH Queen Elizabeth II" in some of our photo captions.

Upon further study, including a review of Debrett's, we see that Mr. Ryan-Lander is correct. Some members of the British royal family are identified as His Royal Highness or Her Royal Highness, yes. But the monarch is not. For the Queen only, the HRH is dropped and the proper title is Her Majesty.

By the same token, Prince Charles is currently His Royal Highness, but he'll be His Majesty if and when he becomes king.

So we learned something. We've changed our captions, and we thank Mr. Ryan-Lander for the alert.

A Stroll in the Garden

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip shelter from the rain as they arrive at the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace last Tuesday.

What a great shot. A day in the life.

I really love how Her Majesty is always impeccably turned out. Note the perfectly matching umbrellas -- turquoise-trimmed for her, black-like-my-suit for him. His top hat is a bit raucous.

In addition to being Ruler of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth, former Empress of India, and Defender of the Faith, Elizabeth II is also the Queen of Sensible Shoes.

Speaking of raucous headgear, who knew Prince Philip actually wore one of these?

And nobody seemed to mind.

Our First Couple Is Taller Than Your First Couple

Barack and Michelle Obama visit Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip yesterday at Buckingham Palace.

The President and First Lady are 6'2" and 5'11", respectively. The Queen is 5'4".

Online sources claim Philip is 5'11" or even 6'2" tall. At their marriage, at least, he was nearly a head taller than Elizabeth. But at age 87, he looks to have shrunk considerably.
