Frida Kahlo Goes to a Garage Sale

  • There’s a garage sale on our street, beautiful Willoughby Street, today. It’s cloudy, damp, and very cheerful with the steady flow of neighbors and Dunkin’ Donuts coffee.

What’s that among the hair-straighteners and tote bags? It’s Frida Kahlo!

But wait, what’s that on her forehead?

Right, right: Diego Rivera, her lover, husband, cheatin’ cad, artistic muse and lifetime frenemy. Let’s zoom in.

    Thass freaky.

The picture is Self-Portrait as a Tehuana (Diego On My Mind), a painting done by Frida Kahlo in 1943. The original is oil on Masonite, about 30×23 inches.  That makes ours almost life-size.

1943 was 11 years before Kahlo’s death. It was also 11 years after her marriage to Rivera, 3 years after their divorce, and 2 years after they got back together, before breaking up again and etc.

As has been noted elsewhere of Kahlo and Rivera. “their greatest creation was the soap opera of their marriage.”

And it’s yours for a dollar!
