    Upon first impression, Whipple does not look or sound like an intimidating competitor. She is dainty and quick to smile, with a voice that sounds more like a mouse than a lion. But she has studied ways to sound fiercer.
     
    Her voice, she admits, can be “kind of pitchy” and “kind of annoying,” so she listens to audiotapes of her performances and works on making her voice more commanding. She tries to take it down an octave.
