Photos ( See all 37 )John Mayer attained pop stardom with his first album, Room For Squares (2001). A breakout hit in 2002, the album earned Mayer TV guest spots and spawned the hit song "Your Body is a Wonderland." Known for guitar-oriented pop and soulful lyrics, Mayer followed his overnight success with a 2003 Grammy (for Best Pop Vocal Performance) and two more releases: the live performance CD Any Given Thursday and the studio release Heavier Things. Mayer grew up in Connecticut and attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston before moving to Atlanta, Georgia to focus on a professional career.
Other pop singer-songwriters include Billy Joel, Randy Newman and James Taylor.
