Barney the Purple Dinosaur is shown as he appeared in his television heyday in the 1990s. His children's show, Barney and Friends, first appeared on PBS in 1992 and ran through 2010; various reruns and other episodes appeared in the years after. Barney was said to be a friendly purple Tyrannosaurus rex, so his 18-year television run was perfectly consistent with the T.rex's estimated lifespan of 30 years. If we guess that he was a frisky five-year-old when the series began, he would have been 23 when the series ended, and we can then presume he enjoyed a leisurely 7-year retirement before his sad but inevitable demise. Except, of course, that he lives forever in the hearts of children everywhere.
