'Nighthawks' by Edward Hopper, now in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago

‘Nighthawks’ by Edward Hopper

'Nighthawks,' this painting by Edward Hopper, is probably the artist's most famous work. The 1942 painting shows patrons of a diner sitting at a counter late at night, seen through a broad picture window. Coffee urns can be seen on the counter, and an ad for "PHILLIES" cigars is seen above the building. The painting was bought by the Art Institute of Chicago for $3000 shortly after its completion, and it has remained in the Institute's collection since.
