Evel Knievel looks through a shark’s jaws

Daredevil motorbike stuntman Evel Knievel peers through the jaws of a shark in a promotional photo for his 1977 TV special Evel Knievel's Death Defiers. The show aired on January 31, 1977, and promised viewers the spectacle of Evel "attempting to jump over the world's largest indoor salt‐water pool, which will be stocked with man‐eating killer sharks." (Other acts included a stuntman in the Sponge Plunge: "A life-risking leap eight stories into a sponge!") However, it was the show itself that died: Evel crashed during in a practice run on the shark tank, broke his collar bone, and couldn't make the jump on live TV as promised. On the plus side, he lived another 30 years until his death in 2007.
