Jonah and the Whale by Pieter Lastman

'Jonah and the Whale,' a 1621 painting by Dutch painter Pieter Lastman. Though the title of the painting describes the creature as a whale -- as do many other modern-day tellings of the story -- the depiction here looks more like the Biblical description of a large or great fish. (Spoiler: After three days and nights, God hears Jonah's prayers and the fish vomits Jonah up onto dry land.) The painting is now part of the collections of Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, Germany.
