Actress and director Regina King won an Academy Award as best supporting actress for her role in the 2018 film If Beale Street Could Talk.

Regina King was 13 when she made her TV debut in the TV show 227 in 1985. She appeared in the John Singleton films Boyz n the Hood (1991), Poetic Justice (1993, with Tupac Shakur) and Higher Learning (1995, with Ice Cube), and then went on to be a regular Hollywood presence in films like Mighty Joe Young (1998), the biopic Ray (2oo4, with Jamie Foxx) and Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (2005, with Sandra Bullock).

At the same time she was making TV appearances on shows like 24, The Big Bang Theory and American Crime. Her roles in the latter show won her Emmy Awards as supporting actress in a limited series or movie.

She won another Emmy in 2018 as outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie for the drama Seven Seconds.

Meanwhile she began directing TV shows, beginning in 2013 with an episode of Southland, and continuing with shows like Greenleaf (2016) and The Good Doctor (2018). She made her feature film debut as a director with 2021’s One Night in Miami.

Her Oscar-winning role came in 2018 in If Beale Street Could Talk, adapted from the 1974 James Baldwin novel about a Harlem woman whose lover is accused falsely of rape.
