Sandra Day O’Connor

Harriet Miers (seen here) was nominated by President George W. Bush to succeed Sandra Day O'Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court in 2005. Miers, a close friend and advisor to Bush, later withdrew her nomination. Samuel Alito was then nominated in her place, and he was confirmed by the Senate.
