Just a Nice Photo: Henrik Ibsen

  • Please to be digging the mighty, mighty sideburns of Henrik Ibsen.

This excellent portrait of the great Norwegian playwright was taken about 1898 by Gustav Borgen. Henrik Ibsen was born in 1828, so he was about 70 years old when this shot was taken. Ibsen was on cruise control by then: he published his masterpiece, A Doll’s House, in 1879, and died in 1906.

Here’s something I didn’t know, courtesy of Wikipedia:

“Ibsen wrote his plays in Dano-Norwegian (the common written language of Denmark and Norway)… Although most of his plays are set in Norway—often in places reminiscent of Skien, the port town where he grew up—Ibsen lived for 27 years in Italy and Germany, and rarely visited Norway during his most productive years.”
