Stephen William Hawking, CH, CBE, FRS (1942-2018) was a theoretical physicist. Hawking was for many years the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He was diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) in the 1960s, but continued on to a stellar career in science.
