Marilyn Manson Biography

Name at birth: Brian Warner

Marilyn Manson is the stage name of rock singer Brian Warner, who fronts the band Marilyn Manson, a controversial stage act that made a name for itself in the late 1990s.

As Manson, Warner wears androgynous white makeup, long hair, and red or black lipstick for a spooky gothic effect, while playing “industrial metal” heavy pop rock.

His act mixes satanic images and themes of rebellion and death, though if Manson is a true believer or just pursuing a colorful show-business schtick is left to the audience to decide. For the first several years of Manson’s popularity, he was a magnet for criticism from pearl-clutching politicians and television evangelists who warned of his links to Satanism.

The group’s albums have included Portrait of an American Family (1994), Antichrist Superstar (1996), Mechanical Animals (1998), The Golden Age of Grotesque (2003), Eat Me, Drink Me (2007), The High End of Low (2009), Born Villain (2012) and Heaven Upside Down (2017).

Their hit singles include “The Beautiful People” (1996), “The Dope Show” (1998), “No Reflection” (2012), “Kill4Me” (2017) and “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” (2019).

Extra credit

Warner reportedly chose his stage name by combining the names of actress Marilyn Monroe and convict Charles Manson… From 1999 to 2001 he was engaged to actress Rose McGowan… He married his longtime girlfriend Heather Sweet on 3 December 2005 in Ireland; Sweet is a burlesque dancer whose stage name is Dita Von Teese. Sweet filed for divorce in December of 2006 after just over a year of marriage, and the divorce was finalized in 2007, the same year it was made public that Manson’s new girlfriend was actress Evan Rachel Wood. Years after their breakup, Wood and others accused Warner in 2021 of sexual abuse; he denied the allegations and sued Wood, et al for defamation. After two years of investigations by California and Federal law enforcement, the matter ended up in civil court.
