Barbara Cartland in the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade

Barbara Cartland, already a famous romance novelist, posed for this formal photo in her role as a deputy of the St. John's Ambulance sometime around 1946. St. Johns Ambulance is, per Wikipedia, a "volunteer-led, charitable non-governmental organization dedicated to the teaching and practice of first aid and the support of the national emergency response system in England." A 1995 story in the Scotland paper The Herald said that Cartland "was awarded her DBE [Dame of the British Empire] by the Queen in 1991 for her many works for charity, including over 50 years with the St John's Ambulance Brigade." If we walk that back, it means she likely got involved with St. John's Ambulance during England's years in World War II (1939-45).
