"Merry Old Santa Claus", this drawing by cartoonist Thomas Nast, appeared in the January 1, 1881 edition of Harper's Weekly. The Thomas Nast interpretation of Santa Claus became a popular one that set the stage for the jolly, bearded, toy-laden version that so many people know today.
