Sir Godfrey Kneller

Sir Isaac Newton: A portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller

This portrait of Sir Isaac Newton was painted by Sir Godfrey Kneller sometime in the early 1700s. Per ArtFund.org, "The painting dates from the very end of Kneller's long and successful career and illustrates the Augustan ideal in portraiture: sober, straightforward in technique and characterisation, classicising, and with a fine simplicity and Gravitas." Whew!

Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723) was a leading portraitist of the day. Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) was a leading physicist of the day. If this was painted around, say, 1712, Newton would have been 70 years old at the time of the sitting. Numerophiles may be interested to note that Kneller was born four years after Newton, and died four years before Newton.
