Portrait by Eduard Ender

Tycho Brahe’s fake nose

Tycho Brahe, the last of the great "naked eye" astronomers, is seen in this portrait by 19th-century artist Eduard Ender. Tycho Brahe's fake nose (well, partial nose prosthesis) is clearly visible in the image. Brahe lost the bridge of his nose in a drunken sword duel with a cousin in 1566, and wore an artificial nose covering (probably made of brass, and held in place with a type of glue or paste) for the rest of his life. Tycho Brahe was born in 1546 and lived until 1601.
