Photo of Bess Truman looking askance between a man in a suit and a woman with a mink stole

The circumstances here are not described, but Bess Truman (center) doesn't seem to be enjoying herself. Perhaps the camera just caught her at an awkward moment. (Is that a check for charity being handed over there?) Bess Truman (1885-1982) was First Lady of the United States from 1945-1953, during the administration of her husband, Harry Truman.

Dig that mink stole on the lady to the right. They did that in those days: wore the whole mink, head and feet included. It was considered fashionable. Let's give her a break, assuming she's handing over a very large amount to a very nice charity.
