The lucky fellow is Marc Mezvinsky, whom she’s been dating for several years. He’s an investment banker and his father and mother are described as “longtime friends” of Bill and Hillary Clinton. Chelsea is their only child.
Mezvinsky’s parents have a colorful past. Both served in the U.S. Congress: Edward Mezvinsky from Iowa for two terms (1973-77) and Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky for one term (1993-95).
Edward Mezvinsky spent most of this decade in federal prison. He was indicted in 2001 on charges of defrauding investors of $10 million for “deals he claimed to be making in Africa.” He pled guilty to 31 counts of fraud in 2002 and was sentenced to 80 months in prison. He began serving the term in February of 2003 and got out a little early, in April of 2008.
For an added dash of color, Edward Mezvinsky tried to plead insanity, saying he had been diagnosed as bipolar and suffered brain damage from an anti-malarial drug. The judge rejected that plea, leading to Mezvinsky’s guilty plea.
