Roger Federer played a terrific between-the-legs shot — a “tweener,” as the announcer calls it — in his first match of the 2010 U.S. Open last night.  

Rafael Nadal Is Number One

Spain’s Rafael Nadal won his fifth French Open yesterday, beating Robin Soderling. That puts Nadal at the top of the rankings in men’s tennis, replacing Roger Federer.

That makes seven Grand Slam titles for Nadal. Federer has won sixteen Grand Slam titles in his career.

Federer Wins Wimbledon in 7 Sets

5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14.Those were the scores from Roger Federer’s big win over Andy Roddick in the men’s finals at Wimbledon today.To put it in perspective, the 30 games in that final set are the equivalent of playing three full sets of 6-4, 4-6 and 6-4. (Or five sets of 6-0… but why go overboard?) Federer now stands alone as the man with the most Grand Slam singles titles ever: 15. Pete Sampras, once the champeen, now is second with 14 Slam titles.

How Fit is Rafael Nadal?

Fit enough to play a 5-hour, 14-minute match on Friday night, then a 4-hour, 23-minute match on Sunday night. Fit enough to do it in Australian summer heat. Fit enough to beat Roger Federer (again) and win the Australian Open for the first time.
