The Miseducation of Lucy Van Pelt

Charlie Brown speaks with a text balloon reading Mark Drew / China Heights Gallery

Chuck Dmeet Chuck B. An Australian gallery is showing a mash-up of ’90s rap and the Peanuts gang by artist Mark Drew. Drew’s specialty is taking scenes from Charles Schulz‘s beloved comic strip and adding “lyrics from songs by Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy, Notorious B.IG., and Digital Underground, among others.”

The gallery is careful to emphasize that this is more than just a funny idea played for laughs, because goofy jokes don’t bring high-end artsy prices. Thus, the paintings are said to explore “a possible anima connection within the spirit of the subjects.” (Per Webster, anima is “an individual’s true inner self that in the analytic psychology of C. G. Jung reflects archetypal ideals of conduct.”) Now that’s a much more expensive concept.
