Chris Pine Biography

Chris Pine is a third-generation Hollywood actor who was Anne Hathaway‘s love interest in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) and is now best-known as Captain Kirk in Star Trek films. Chris Pine grew up in Los Angeles, the son of actors Robert Pine and Gwynne Gilford and the grandson of actress Anne Gwynne. He graduated from the University of California in Berkeley in 2002 and, after some time spent dabbling in theater, began getting TV guest roles in 2003. His turn as Lord Nicholas Devereaux in the sequel to 2001’s The Princess Diaries made him a teen heartthrob and his career was off and running. Although audiences were small for his 2006 films, Just My Luck and Smokin’ Aces, both films had a “buzz” that helped keep Pine in the public eye. (Just My Luck was blessed/cursed with Lindsay Lohan as its star, and Smokin’ Aces was supposed to be that year’s Quentin Tarantino movie not made by Tarantino.) Blue-eyed and firm-jawed, Pine began to specialize in handsome rogues and misfits: his star status was secured with his 2009 appearance as the ultimate lovable rogue, Captain James T. Kirk, in a brand-new film version of Star Trek.  He returned as Kirk in the 2013 sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. He also played a rogue conductor in the runaway-train drama Unstoppable (2010, with Denzel Washington) and a ne’er-do-well son in the drama People Like Us (2012).

Extra credit

Chris Pine’s dad, Robert Pine, played Sgt. Joe Getraer in the TV series CHiPs (1977-83)… Captain Kirk was played by William Shatner in earlier films and in the original TV series (1966-69).
