Robert Duvall Biography

A gruff leading man and flinty character actor from the 1960s into the 2020s, Robert Duvall specialized in taciturn cowboys, fierce leaders, and driven characters of all types.

Among his most memorable roles were the surfing-mad colonel in Apocalypse Now (“Charlie don’t surf!”), Tom Hagen, consigliere to the Corleone mafia family in The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, and “Bull” Meechum, the abusive but ultimately heroic Marine pilot in The Great Santini (1979).

Robert Duvall made his screen debut in 1962 as the creepy Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird. He further made his name in character roles, like the sassy cab driver in the Steve McQueen cop drama Bullitt (1968) and a bad hombre opposite John Wayne in True Grit (1969).

In the 1970s he worked often with Francis Ford Coppola, appearing in The Godfather (1972, with Marlon Brando), The Conversation (1974) and as the fanatical Colonel Kilgore in Apocalypse Now (1979). Duvall was on a tear throughout the decade, with roles from the prudish Dr. Frank Burns in M*A*S*H (1970) to the cynical network executive Frank Hackett in Network (1976).

Robert Duvall earned seven Oscar nominations, four for supporting roles in The Godfather (1972), Apocalypse Now (1979), A Civil Action (1998) and The Judge (2014). As lead actor, he was nominated for The Great Santini (1979) and The Apostle (1997), and won the best actor Oscar for 1983’s Tender Mercies.

On television he was Emmy-nominated for the hit 1989 miniseries Lonesome Dove, in a memorable pairing with Tommy Lee Jones.

Duvall also directed films, including The Apostle (with Farrah Fawcett) and the 1975 rodeo documentary We’re Not the Jet Set.

Robert Duvall’s last feature film role was a small part as Jean Pepe in the 2022 period piece The Pale Blue Eye, released when Duvall was 93. At his death in 2026, his wife posted on Facebook: “His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court.”
