Oscar-winning actress Grace Kelly married Monaco’s Prince Ranier III in 1956.

Charles Manson was sentenced to life in prison in 1971 for his role in the 1969 murder spree that took Sharon Tate‘s life.

David Koresh‘s religious group in Waco, Texas, known as the Branch Davidians, was overwhelmed by federal agents under orders from then-Attorney General Janet Reno in 1993. After a 51-day stand-off with Koresh, the agents moved on the Branch Davidian compound with tanks. A fire broke out and Koresh was killed, along with 76 of his followers (including 20 children).

168 people were killed at a federal building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma when a van packed with explosives was detonated in 1995. A former U.S. soldier, Timothy McVeigh and his co-conspirator Terry Nichols, were convicted in 1997, and McVeigh was executed on 11 June 2001 (Nichols was sentenced to life in prison).

Germany’s Joseph Ratzinger became Pope Benedict XVI in 2005.
